Head Out Into the World – World Map Locations

This post is a (fairly) exhaustive list of the locations in Chrono Trigger and some notes on their names and translations. I tried to catch as much as I could and give some insight into where the names came from, since some of them are different from the English version!

Head below the jump to see the list!

The Different Time Periods:

A.D.1000年 = 1000 A.D.
A.D.600年 = 600 A.D.
A.D.2300年 = 2300 A.D.
B.C.6500萬年 = 65,000,000 B.C.
B.C.12000年 = 12,000 B.C.

Note the way the ages are structured: the naming starts with the larger “era” (A.D., B.C.) and then goes into the year. Also note for 65,000,000 B.C. the Chinese is 6500萬年. If you read this post on Chinese counting, you know that the base unit is four: so, here, you have the number 6500 preceding the 萬. Since 萬 = 10,000, we just add four zeros at the end of the original number, 6500, and end up with the full year: 6500,0000 or 65,000,000 A.D.!

Truce and Porre Locations (1,000 A.D./600 A.D.)

巴雷波利鎮的旅館(bāléibōlìzhèn de lǚguǎn)Porre Inn (note: Porre is actually “Parepoli” from the Japanese パレポリ, which is reflected in the Chinese translation as well.)

An interesting change to note here is the transition from 村 to 鎮 from 600 A.D. to 1,000 A.D.: In 600 A.D. Truce and Porre Inn are named 和平村的旅館(hépíngcūn de lǚguǎn)and 巴雷波利村的旅館(bāléibōlìcūn de lǚguǎn)respectively, but in 1,000 A.D. they are 和平鎮的旅館(hépíngzhèn de lǚguǎn)and 巴雷波利鎮的旅館(bāléibōlìzhèn de lǚguǎn)Porre Inn. In Chinese there’s more of an obvious change, that of growing cities, which isn’t reflected in the English version. It’s a subtle but nice detail to note!

  1. Hi,

    Your Project Chrono is so cool! Maybe because it matches my schedule everyday… learning Chinese and playing this amazing old school RPG! I might agree this game is the best of all time (like you said) although we’ve got so many other good RPGs on Snes (Secret of Mana, Zelda… etc). I’m torn 🙂
    What is your plan? Are you playing the game again thanks to the iOS version in Chinese or are you translating the game? I mean, it could be fun to learn Chinese by translating classic old school RPGs in Chinese (the ROM version). Like some Japanese RPG were only translated in English on the ROM version…

    BTW, I’ve actually reached the son of the sun motherfucking BOSS, I just found the trick with the light. But after reading this article, i’m just like: I want to do it again in Chinese! Hahaha. Anyway, I’m doing a project called Ninchanese,com, and it could be very interesting to add some vocabulary about video games! 😀 What do you think of the idea? Maybe we can share on that matter. If you’re interested, I did an article here about Chinese gaming vocabulary : http://ninchanese.com/do-you-speak-video-gaming-in-chinese/ Have Fun with the game 🙂

    1. Hi there,

      Thank you so much for comment! It is really tough because as you said there ARE so many great games for SNES. I would love to play Zelda in Chinese–or even EarthBound if I could find it. Now I’ll have to see if I can find those in Chinese!

      As for my plan, I’m mostly playing the game again because of the iOS version having Chinese, which is great. As I go along I’ll post fun dialog and useful terms. I haven’t decided on the translating part yet. I’m debating between translating it to the original that we all know, or showing what differences there really are in the dialog.. or both! Any thoughts on that?

      Son of the Sun was .. yeah well we know :p But I almost think that awful awful thing on Mountain of Woe (Giga Gaia maybe?) was one of my least favorite boss battles. I never felt prepared for it!

      I actually am familiar with Ninchinese, I’ve been following it for a while and I even signed up for the beta. I’m super excited to see it because from what I’ve seen so far it looks like it’ll be really amazing! So we can definitely talk more about adding vocabulary about video games.

      Also that article is pretty awesome–and I would totally love a giant sized GameBoy like that. That makes me super happy. Thank you for sharing!!
